I was pleased to be accepted as an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center for their September 2015 session. Over the last 30 years, VSC has grown to become the largest international artists' and writers' residency program in the United States. Their mission is to provide studio residencies in an inclusive, international community, honoring creative work as the communication of spirit through form.
I used my time at VSC to create an multimedia installation entitled SELF CONSTRUCT, which incorporated elements of animation, video projection, sculpture and painting into a work that can be described as an internal self portrait. This work was inspired by an injury that I incurred in July 2015 which caused me to look internally and begin creating digital anatomical sketches as a method of recovering from this injury. The result can be seen as my personal effort to overcome an adverse situation by using my creative vision and an extension of my continuing effort to confront negative personal experiences and transform them into acts of physical and metaphysical evolution.
